My Camp: Interview With BritInTheSix

Written By: Maya Joglekar

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work at a camp abroad? Bethany Wright, author of the camp blog Britinthesix, told us all about her experience working at summer camp abroad!

Originally from England, Britney has worked at Camp Walden in Canada for 9 summers!

Bethany found Camp Walden through an agency that helps place people in camps internationally. They flew her overseas when she was just 20! Because of her experience and knowledge of applying and working at camps abroad, Bethany created her blog Britinthesix to share advice about working at summer camp. Her main goal is to relieve the stress of international camp counselor and provide knowledge to counselors who are new to camp.

Bethany explained the immediate culture shock she felt when going to camp since there are no summer camps in England, so she did not know what to expect. She was also living with counselors who had been going to Camp Walden for years, she was not living with other international counselors. Even though there was some culture shock, Bethany fell in love with Camp Walden and knew that camp is where she was meant to be. One of her favorite parts about Camp Walden is the burning of the W on the last night of camp. Everyone walks down the amphitheater, and they sing songs while someone lights the W with a torch. Bethany said it’s a very special moment to share together, especially on the last night of camp.

Bethany’s biggest piece of advice for aspiring counselors is to jump in with both feet, otherwise you won’t get the full experience! Check out more of Bethany’s advice on her blog Britinthesix, or on her instagram @britinthesix!
