Solar Eclipse Crafts & Activities For Kids

Written By: happycamper

Get ready for an awe-inspiring celestial event! On March 29, 2025, a solar eclipse will grace the sky, making it the perfect opportunity for kids to learn about space and science in a hands-on, exciting way.

These solar eclipse crafts and activities will spark curiosity and make the event even more memorable.

chalkSolar Eclipse Chalk Art

Let kids express their creativity while learning about the phases of an eclipse.

What You’ll Need: Sidewalk chalk, and a sunny outdoor space

How to Do It: Draw a large sun and moon on the pavement. Use different colors to show the progression of the eclipse. Let kids walk through the phases, explaining each stage as they go.

DIY Pinhole Projector

A pinhole projector is a fun and safe way to observe the eclipse without looking directly at the sun.

What You’ll Need: A shoebox or a piece of cardboard, aluminum foil, a pin or thumbtack, white paper, tape

How to Make It: Cut a small hole on one end of the box. Tape aluminum foil over the hole and poke a small hole in the foil with the pin. Tape a piece of white paper on the inside of the box, opposite the pinhole. Stand with your back to the sun and let sunlight pass through the pinhole, projecting an image of the eclipse onto the paper inside the box.

oreosOreo Eclipse Phases

A delicious and educational way to learn about the moon’s movement during an eclipse.

What You’ll Need: A pack of Oreos, a plastic knife, and a paper plate

How to Do It: Carefully twist apart the Oreos. Use the plastic knife to scrape off parts of the cream to represent different eclipse phases. Arrange the cookies on a plate in order from partial eclipse to total eclipse and back.

Eclipse-Themed Scavenger Hunt

Plan an exciting scavenger hunt with space-themed clues leading to a ‘solar’ prize.

What You’ll Need: Printed or written clues about space, the sun, and the moon, small prizes (glow sticks, space stickers, or moon pies)

How to Do It: Hide the clues around the yard. Each clue should lead to the next, teaching kids facts about eclipses along the way. The final clue leads to a prize at the ‘sun’ (a designated finish point).

The March 29, 2025, solar eclipse is a perfect time to inspire curiosity and creativity in kids. These activities will make the experience hands-on, engaging, and unforgettable. So grab your supplies, gather your young astronomers, and celebrate this cosmic spectacle with fun and learning!
