Keep the camp spirit alive — even when it’s too wet to go outside!
When fall weather brings chilly rain, muddy yards, and the occasional early snowstorm, it’s easy for kids to bounce off the walls and parents to run out of ideas. But with a little imagination, you can bring the energy and creativity of summer camp indoors with a spooky, seasonal twist!
Turn your living room, basement, or hallway into a spooky challenge course. Use pillows, blankets, hula hoops, chairs, and painter’s tape to set up a “haunted path” kids must climb, crawl, and balance through.
Spooky twist: Add plastic spiders to crawl over, a “bat cave” made from a blanket over chairs, or a “witch’s swamp” with green construction paper stepping stones.
Camp-style bonus: Use a flashlight for kids to navigate the course in the dark!
This classic camp game gets a Halloween upgrade! Sit in a circle and tell a spooky story one sentence at a time, with each person adding their own twist.
Spooky twist: Pass a flashlight around and turn off the lights for full campfire effect. You can start with a prompt like “It was a dark and stormy night at Camp Creepy…” and let the kids take it from there!
Tip for younger kids: Provide cards with spooky words they can draw from for inspiration (e.g. ghost, pumpkin, werewolf, fog, broomstick).
Quick, silly challenges make rainy days fly by. Use Halloween themes for minute-long games like:
• Pumpkin Stack: Stack mini pumpkins as high as you can in 60 seconds.
• Eyeball Roll: Use ping pong balls with eyes drawn on them and try to roll them into a cup.
• Mummy Wrap: One person wraps the other in toilet paper (the more chaotic, the better!).
Camp feel: Set up a scoreboard and give out “Monster Camp Badges” or printable certificates for participation.
Campers love their cabins, so let kids design their own “cabin flag” for a made-up spooky campsite. Use construction paper, felt, markers, and stickers to create flags for places like “Werewolf Woods,” “Pumpkin Patch Point,” or “Zombie Lake.”
Add to the fun: Hang flags up and let kids come up with camp cheers or mottos for each “cabin.”
Skills bonus: This is a great low-mess craft that encourages creativity and team-building.
Pump up the tunes and turn your living room into a haunted hootenanny. Use Halloween classics like “Monster Mash,” “Thriller,” “Ghostbusters,” or “Purple People Eater” for a dance-and-sing party.
Campy element: Hand out glow sticks, turn off the lights, and let kids wear their costumes. You can even do a “camp talent show” with spooky performances or made-up songs.
Rainy days don’t have to mean bored kids and burnt out grownups. With just a few easy supplies and some Halloween spirit, you can create indoor camp-style fun that keeps everyone moving, laughing, and making memories.
These Halloween twists on classic camp games are perfect for bringing the outdoors in, and they work whether you’re a parent, teacher, babysitter, or just someone who wants to see a kid smile when the skies are gray.
So light a (pretend) campfire, crank up the spooky tunes, and let the indoor Halloween adventures begin!
