Papel Picado! Make This Fun Craft!

Discover the joyful art of crafting your own papel picado !

One of the most traditional folk art used in many Mexican celebrations is papel picado (Prounounced as pah. – pehl. pee. – kah. – doh) or “pecked paper”. These vibrant and vivid banners are typically crafted to adorn and enliven all your fiestas (celebrations), such as  birthdays, weddings and Day of the Dead. What’s even more exciting? Designing papel picado means that you can bring any creative idea you dream of to life! Some common designs include hearts, birds, flowers and words. Challenge yourself to get as creative as possible!  

Papel Picado has been around for generations upon generations with influences from all over the world. Traditionally, papel picado is made with tissue paper, but it can also be made using plastic or construction paper. Here are the following materials and steps you will need in order to make your very own papel picado!

Materials:

 • Colorful construction paper 

•  Pencil or marker for sketching design 

•  A pair of scissors 

• Hole puncher (optional)

• String/yarn (optional)

 Steps:

1) Fold your paper in half then fold in half again (creating four equal rectangles)

 

2) Sketch a design on your folded rectangle

 

3) Cut out your sketched design 

4) Hole punch both ends of the entire paper (optional)

5) Insert yarn or string in order to hang up your paper picado (optional)

6) Continue steps until you’ve completed enough to create your banner

Una de las artes populares más tradicionales utilizadas en muchas celebraciones mexicanas es el papel picado o “pecked paper” en inglés. Estos carteles vibrantes y vívidos generalmente se elaboran para adornar y animar todas sus fiestas como cumpleaños, bodas y el Día de Muertos. ¿Qué es aún más emocionante? ¡Diseñar papel picado significa que puedes hacer realidad cualquier idea creativa que tengas! Algunos diseños más populares incluyen corazones, pájaros, flores y palabras. ¡Reta tu creatividad al máximo al crear papel picado! 

Papel Picado ha existido durante generaciones y generaciones con influencias de todo el mundo. 

Tradicionalmente, el papel picado se hace con papel de seda, pero también se puede hacer con plástico o papel de construcción. ¡Aquí están los siguientes materiales y pasos que necesitarás para diseñar papel picado! 

Materiales:

• Papel de construcción colorido

• Lápiz o marcador para dibujar el diseño.

• Un par de tijeras

• Perforadora (opcional)

• Cuerda/hilo (opcional)

  

 Pasos:

1) Dobla el papel a la mitad y luego vuelve a doblarlo a la mitad de nuevo (creando cuatro rectángulos iguales).

2) Dibuja un diseño en tu rectángulo doblado

3) Recorta tu diseño esbozado

4) Perfora ambos extremos de el papel (opcional)

5) Inserta la cuerda o hilo para colgar tu papel picado (opcional)

6) Continúe los pasos hasta que hayas completado lo suficiente para tu celebración
