Nature Exploration: Discovering Wildlife At Camp

Written By: happycamper

Summer camp offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the wonders of the natural world. One of the most exciting aspects of camp life is the chance to explore and discover wildlife. From the chirping of birds at dawn to the rustle of leaves as a deer passes by, nature is alive and waiting to be explored.

Here’s your guide to discovering wildlife at camp and making the most of your nature exploration.

Birds: Our Feathered Friends

Bird watching is a fantastic way to start your day at camp. Early mornings are the best time to observe birds as they are most active during this period.

Common birds you might encounter include robins, blue jays, and owls. When bird watching, be quiet. Birds are easily startled, so move slowly and speak softly. A good pair of binoculars can help you see birds up close without disturbing them. A bird field guide can help you identify different species and learn about their habits.

Animal Tracks: Clues to Wildlife

While you may not always see animals directly, their tracks can tell you a lot about their presence and behavior.

Common tracks you might find include deer (look for cloven hoof prints, usually in paris), raccoons (small handprints), and squirrels (small, elongated prints with visible toes). To find prints, look in muddy or sandy areas because tracks are easiest to spot in soft ground. Measure the size to help with identification. Follow the tracks to see where they lead and you might spot an animal.

Safety Tips for Wildlife Exploration

While exploring nature, it’s essential to stay safe and respect the wildlife and their habitats. Keep a safe distance: Never approach wild animals; use binoculars for a closer look. Stay on marked trails and leave no trace. Do not feed the wildlife as it can disrupt their natural behaviors.

Taking the time to appreciate and understand the natural world is one of the most rewarding aspects of summer camp. Encourage campers to keep a journal of their observations, sketch what they see, and share their findings with others. Happy exploring!
