How to Set Up a Camp-at-Home Adventure

Written By: happycamper

Bring the magic of summer camp to your backyard. Summer camp isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling. And at Happy Camper Live, we believe that feeling can be sparked anywhere, even right at home! Whether you’re easing into summer break, your kids are waiting for in-person camp, or you’re simply looking for screen-free fun, setting up a camp-at-home adventure is the perfect way to kick off the season.

Here’s how to create a summer camp experience without leaving your driveway.

#1 Set the Scene

Transform your backyard, living room, or porch into “Camp [Your Last Name]” or make up a fun camp name with the kids!

What you’ll need: a tent or blanket fort, sleeping bags or cozy pillows, string lights or a lantern for nighttime glow, a camp sign (DIY with cardboard + markers), and a camp playlist (nature sounds + campfire songs).

#2 Create a Camp Schedule

Kids thrive on routine—especially the fun kind. Make a flexible camp schedule with things like: morning flag-raising or a silly dance party, activity blocks for crafts, games, cooking, and nature time, “cabin time” for reading or relaxing, and campfire time in the evening.

#3 Choose Your Camp Activities

Think beyond just playing outside—go full-on camp counselor! For arts and crafts, consider friendship bracelets, rock painting, or tie-dye shirts. For STEM fun, try DIY slime, solar oven s’mores, or build a birdhouse. Of course, you have to have sports and games. Try a backyard obstacle course, water balloon toss, or scavenger hunt. Don’t forget performance time for talent shows, skit night, or a dance battle.

#4 Get Camp Cooking

No camp is complete without campfire eats! Try these easy, parent-approved recipes: S’mores (classic or microwave version), banana boats with chocolate and marshmallows, mini hot dogs on skewers, and trail mix.

campfir#5 End the Day with Campfire Vibes

Even without a real fire, you can still capture the spirit of a classic campfire night. Try telling stories with a flashlight, playing campfire games, or singing songs.

Camp isn’t about the zip line or the lake—it’s about connection, creativity, and joy. And with a little imagination (and maybe some marshmallows), you can turn your home into the best summer camp around.
