Every kid should experience summer camp, but everyone is different and some kids may need a more specialized camp experience. Finding a special needs summer camp for your child doesn’t have to be a difficult process. These days there are camps that can accommodate kids of different abilities so every child can have a fun and safe summer camp experience.

The biggest benefit of a special needs camp is that there will be staff equipped to care for your child. Special needs camps are also familiar with accommodations requests, and can make sure your child has what they need to have a safe and fun camp experience. Camps that specialize in taking care of kids with a specific set of needs often have their physical space set up in a way that maximizes their ability to care for your child.
A great resource is to use the American Camp Association website to search for camps that accommodate special needs. Their website has a special drop down section in the search menu that allows you to search for camps accommodating disabilities or special needs. You can also select whether you’re looking for a camp that exclusively caters to a specific disability or one that just specializes in it. The list is extensive: Asthma, autism and food allergies are just some examples of the filters you can sort camps by.
A simple search on the internet can often help direct you to special needs camps in your area. Plug in “special needs summer camp” and your city and state into an internet search site to see what comes up nearby. Do your research though. The first results that come up may not be the ones you should automatically go with. It helps to also look for reviews of camps online too so you can be fully informed.
If you’re struggling to find a special needs camp, reach out to other summer camps in the area. Camp directors often network with other camps, so they may be able to refer you to a special needs summer camp in your area. When you reach out give as many specifics as you can, so they can steer you in the right direction.

Once you find a camp you think might be right for your child, schedule a time to speak with the camp director. Have a list of questions ready for your call with them, so you can have a full picture of what to expect when you drop your child off at camp. You need to feel comfortable with the summer camp you choose, so be as informed as possible.
Summer camp is an amazing experience most kids will remember forever. Finding the right one is a process. Take your time and find the one that will be best for your child.
