How To Build A Spooky Outdoor Obstacle Course For Kids

Written By: happycamper

Fall is a magical time of year – the air is crisp, the leaves are changing, and Halloween excitement is in full swing. If you’re looking for a creative way to get your kids outside, moving, and off screens, a spooky outdoor obstacle course might be just what you need. Inspired by the energy of summer camp and the festive spirit of Halloween, this activity is simple to set up, easy to customize, and guaranteed to bring out giggles, teamwork, and maybe a few fun-sized scares (nothing too spooky, of course!).

kids high fivingWhat You’ll Need:

These are our suggestions! Feel free to take what you want and add in some other Halloween items based on what you have on-hand. Anything that screams “Halloween” and encourages movement and play.

Pool noodles

• Cardboard boxes

Hula hoops

Old sheets

Mini pumpkins

Plastic spiders

Glow sticks

Setting up the Spooky Stations:

#1 Witch’s Broom Balance Walk

Lay down a pool noodle or a 2×4 as a balance beam. Kids must walk across it while holding a “witch’s broom” (or just a stick). Bonus points for cackling.

#2 Pumpkin Patch Hop

Scatter mini pumpkins in a zigzag pattern. Kids must hop from one to the next without touching the ground in between.

#3 Spider Web Crawl

Use yarn, string, or streamers to create a “web” between chairs or trees. Kids have to crawl through without touching the web!

#4 Ghoul Toss

Set up buckets or jack-o’-lantern containers and have kids toss bean bags, plastic bones, or rolled socks into them.

#5 Graveyard Crawl Tunnel

Decorate a cardboard box tunnel with fake cobwebs or skeletons. Kids crawl through on their hands and knees. This is perfect for creepy-crawly energy.

#6 Ghost Dash Finale

This spooky obstacle course is more than just fun — it’s a chance to make memories, encourage movement, and stretch those creative muscles. Whether you’re hosting a Halloween playdate, adding a twist to your homeschool PE, or just want a fun afternoon in the backyard, this camp-inspired adventure will bring the laughs (and a few spooky squeals!).

So grab your pumpkins, get the broomsticks ready, and let the ghoul games begin!
