Five Winter Camp Ideas for Kids to Do at Home During Winter Break

Written By: happycamper

When the snow starts falling—or even if it doesn’t—winter break is the perfect time to bring the spirit of camp right into your home. Kids love having fun, staying active, and creating special memories, and you don’t need a cabin in the woods to make it happen.

Here are five winter camp ideas that work with or without snow.

#1 Indoor Snowball Fight (No Snow Needed!)

Grab some soft white socks, roll them into balls, and let the indoor snowball fight begin! Clear out a safe space in the living room, set up “forts” with pillows or chairs, and divide into teams. This is a high-energy activity that gets everyone moving, no matter the weather outside.

Camp Tip: Add a twist by playing capture-the-flag style—hide a stuffed animal or toy that each team tries to capture while dodging snowballs.

#2 Winter Nature Scavenger Hunt

Bundle up and head outdoors to explore. Kids can search for pinecones, animal tracks, icicles, or even winter birds. If there’s no snow, challenge them to find signs of the changing season: bare branches, acorns, or evergreen trees.

Camp Tip: Make it more engaging by giving kids a checklist to complete, or let them take photos of what they discover to create a “Winter Adventure Album.”

#3 Campfire Cooking Indoors

No campfire? No problem. Gather around the kitchen and make classic camp treats with a winter twist. Think s’mores made in the oven, hot cocoa topped with marshmallows, or popcorn with festive sprinkles. Kids can even create their own “menu” and serve up snacks like they’re running the camp canteen.

Camp Tip: Play camp songs or tell stories while enjoying the treats for a full campfire experience.

#4 DIY Winter Olympics

Set up challenges inside or outside to mimic your own Winter Games. Try “skiing” on paper plates across the floor, sliding contests on snow (if you have it), or timed obstacle courses in the basement. Award silly medals made from cardboard and ribbon.

Camp Tip: Encourage teamwork by creating mixed-age teams so everyone has a role to play.

#5 Arctic Arts and Crafts

Winter is the perfect season for cozy craft time. Kids can make snowflake designs from coffee filters, build igloos out of sugar cubes, or create penguins and polar bears with construction paper. For extra fun, challenge them to create their own “winter mascot” for the family camp.

Camp Tip: Display the crafts in a special “Camp Winter Gallery” at home so kids feel proud of their creations.

Bringing Camp Home for the Winter

Camp isn’t just for summer. With a little creativity, families can make winter break just as magical. Whether it’s a pretend snowball fight, a scavenger hunt, or Olympic-style challenges, kids can enjoy camp-inspired fun all season long—snow or no snow.
