As the leaves begin to change and the air gets crisp, it’s the perfect time to introduce kids to fun fall crafts at summer camp! Creating a DIY fall wreath is not only a creative way to celebrate the season, but it also helps kids connect with nature and develop fine motor skills.
• Paper plates (for the wreath base)
• Scissors
• Glue or a glue stick
• Assorted fall leaves (real or faux)
• Small pinecones, acorns, or other natural items
• Colored construction paper (red, orange, yellow, and brown)
• Markers or crayons
• Ribbon for hanging
• Stickers, glitter, or other decorative items (optional)
Start by cutting out the center of a paper plate to create the base for the wreath. This circular shape will serve as the foundation on which the kids will glue their fall materials. You can do this step in advance for younger kids or let older campers practice their scissor skills.
Take the kids on a mini nature walk around the camp to collect fallen leaves, pinecones, acorns, and other small items. This part of the craft doubles as an opportunity for them to explore and learn about the fall season. Make sure to explain how to identify safe and interesting objects.
Once the materials are gathered, it’s time to glue the leaves and other natural treasures onto the paper plate. Kids can layer them around the plate’s edge to create a full, textured look. Encourage creativity—there’s no wrong way to make a wreath!
For an extra pop of color, have the kids cut out shapes from colored construction paper—think pumpkins, apples, or fall leaves—and glue them onto the wreath. They can also use markers or crayons to write their names or draw patterns on their wreath.
Finally, attach a piece of ribbon to the top of the wreath for easy hanging. If the kids want, they can sprinkle some glitter or add stickers to give their wreath a little sparkle.
Fall wreaths are a great craft for camp because they’re easy, hands-on, and allow kids to engage with the natural world. It’s also a project that suits all ages—older kids can get more detailed with their designs, while younger campers can focus on simple leaf placement and colors. DIY fall wreaths are the perfect autumn activity that kids will love creating. Not only do they get to take home a piece of their camp experience, but they also get to showcase their creativity and the beauty of the season. Plus, it’s a great way to teach them about the changing seasons while enjoying the fresh, crisp fall air!
