Eco-Friendly Summer Camp Practices To Adopt At Home

Summer camp is a time for outdoor adventures, making new friends, and learning about nature. One of the most valuable lessons camp teaches is how to care for the environment. As summer ends and you return home, why not bring some of those eco-friendly practices with you?

Here are some sustainable habits learned at camp that you can easily incorporate into your everyday life.

At camp, reducing waste is key to keeping the environment clean and healthy. You can continue this at home by opting for reusable water bottles, lunch containers, and shopping bags. Before throwing something away, think about how you could repurpose it. Old jars can become storage containers, and worn-out clothes can be turned into rags or craft materials. Set up a recycling station at home and make sure to separate paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Educate your family on what can and cannot be recycled.

Composting

Many camps have composting programs to reduce food waste and enrich the soil. Start composting at home by setting up a compost bin (with adult permission). You can use a small indoor bin or a larger outdoor compost pile. Add kitchen scraps like fruit peels, vegetable leftovers, coffee grounds, and eggshells. Learn what can and cannot be composted to avoid common mistakes. Once your compost breaks down, use it to nourish your plants and garden.

 

Conserve Water

Water conservation is often a focus at summer camps, especially during outdoor activities. Implement these water-saving practices at home. Challenge yourself and your family to take shorter showers. A five-minute shower can save gallons of water. Don’t leave the water running while brushing your teeth, washing dishes, or cleaning vegetables. Check for leaks in faucets and pipes. Even a small drip can waste a significant amount of water over time.

 

Eco-Friendly Transportation

At camp, walking or biking is often the primary mode of transportation. Incorporate eco-friendly transportation methods into your daily routine. If possible, walk or bike to school, work, or local errands instead of driving. Organize carpools with friends, neighbors, or colleagues to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. Take advantage of buses, trains, or subways to minimize your carbon footprint.

Camps often emphasize the importance of connecting with nature. Make it a habit to spend time outside every day, whether it’s in your backyard, a local park, or a nature trail. Join community efforts to clean up local parks, beaches, or trails. This is a great way to protect the environment while enjoying the outdoors.
