The holiday season is the perfect time to get kids involved in festive crafts that make your home feel cozy and personal. Creating DIY holiday or decorations is a great way to get into the holiday spirit, build memories, and let kids show off their creativity. They can even make some to give as gifts to their neighbors, friends, or teachers.
Salt Dough OrnamentsSalt dough ornaments are a timeless, kid-friendly project. Kids can make ornaments to hang on the tree, gift to relatives, or use as personalized gift tags.
What You’ll Need: 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of salt, 1/2 cup of warm water, cookie cutters, paint, brushes, and string or ribbon.
Instructions: Mix flour, salt, and warm water to create dough. Roll out the dough and let kids use cookie cutters to make holiday shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole for hanging, then bake at 200°F for 2-3 hours or until hard. Let cool, then let the kids paint and decorate! Once dry, hang them up on the tree or around the house.
This easy craft is perfect for young kids and can be customized with different colors and accessories to match your decor. You can do them in red and green for Christmas or white and blue to hit the winter theme.
What You’ll Need: Paper plates, paint in the color of your choice, colorful pom-poms, glitter, stickers, and ribbon for hanging.
Instructions: Cut out the center of the paper plate to create a wreath shape. Let kids paint the plate with the paint of your choice and decorate with pom-poms, glitter, or stickers. Attach a ribbon for hanging, and display it on a door or wall.
Pine Cone Christmas TreesIf you live near pine trees, this craft is practically free! Kids can create their own mini Christmas trees with a few simple materials.
What You’ll Need: Pine cones, green paint, small pom-poms, beads, and glue.
Instructions: Paint pine cones green and let them dry. Glue on tiny pom-poms or beads as “ornaments” on each cone. Set these mini Christmas trees on tabletops, shelves, or even in windowsills for a little extra cheer. Gift one to your teacher for a cute addition to their desk.
Snow globes are magical, and kids can make their own using jars and simple holiday decorations.
What You’ll Need: Small mason jars, mini holiday figurines or plastic animals, glitter, glue gun or waterproof adhesive, water and glycerin (optional).
Instructions: Glue the figurine to the inside of the mason jar lid. Add glitter to the jar, then fill with water (and a few drops of glycerin for slow-falling glitter). Screw on the lid, flip over, and shake!
