Cooking
Fall is a great time to have your kids get involved in cooking. Fall cooking has vibrant flavors and scents of apples, pumpkin, and cinnamon. Pick a cozy fall recipe for kids and let them help make it. The time you spend together learning a new recipe or skill is a memory-making moment.
You will need: 4 cored and sliced apples, 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of sugar (optional)
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Core and slice the apples. Then mix the cinnamon and sugar in a bowl. Let the kids coat the apple slices in the cinnamon sugar mix. Place on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and bake until the chips are dry, approximately 2-3 hours. Enjoy this cozy apple snack throughout the day!
You will need: macaroni or pasta of choice, preferred cheeses, butter, butternut squash, milk, and preferred seasonings.
First, bake your butternut squash in the oven until it’s soft. Once cooled, mash the squash with a fork or masher and set aside until you’ve made your cheese sauce. Cook your pasta and drain. While the pasta is cooling, make your cheese sauce. Melt your butter, milk, cheeses, seasonings together and then add in the mashed squash and stir.
Put the pasta in a baking container and coat with the cheese mixture. Cover with foil. Then bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove, cover with more cheese, and bake for another 10-15 minutes. Let cool slightly, and serve.
You will need: 2 tubes of the 8-pack cinnamon rolls, ¾ cup pumpkin puree, ½ cup milk, 3 eggs, ½ cup light packed brown sugar, ¼ cup sugar, 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
Preheat the oven as directed with the cinnamon roll package. Line the baking pan with foil and spray. Unpop the can of cinnamon rolls (kids love doing this job!) and pull apart the cinnamon rolls. Place them in the pan next to each other.
Mix the eggs, pumpkin puree, milk, both sugars, pumpkin pie spice, salt, vanilla, and cinnamon until smooth. Kids love mixing, so this is another good opportunity for them to get involved. Once combined, pour the mixture over the cinnamon rolls and bake as directed. Let cool, then use the cinnamon roll frosting included with the package. Add some pumpkin pie spice to it for a little extra pumpkin flavor.
Grilled cheese is an excellent choice for a hot meal on a cold day. Pair it with soup of your choice for an even cozier option.
You will need: 2 pieces of bread of your choice (we recommend garlic Texas toast), spaghetti sauce, pepperoni slices, and mozzarella cheese slices.
Pop the bread in the toaster or oven to get a nice golden toast. Then add a couple of tablespoons of spaghetti sauce to each slice of the toast. Top with layers of mozzarella cheese, pepperoni slices, and another layer of cheese. Then top with the other bread layer. Heat a pan over medium heat with a little oil and then heat your sandwich until it’s warm and the cheese is melted. Serve hot.
