Teenagers are full of ideas, creativity and energy, so we’re recommending five activities for teens to do with friends and family. Technology is fun, but sometimes it’s good to put the phone down and try a new activity.
Being creative and using your hands to make something is a rewarding experience. Drawing, painting, jewelry making, wood burning, scrapbooking and sewing are all fun crafts for teens to try. Pull the crafts out, put on some good music, and let the creativity flow!
Scavenger hunts are a great brain teaser that also gets participants moving around and having fun. Teenagers can build their own scavenger hunt and invite family or friends to participate, or find a generic scavenger hunt template online. Ask participants to take pictures of each thing on the list that they find. A couple of examples of what to look for around town include a sculpture, an art exhibit, graffiti art, or the sign with your city’s name on it. End the scavenger hunt with a picnic lunch at a local park.
Moving around and playing a sport is a fun activity that will keep teens healthy and active. Organize a weekly game of softball or a round of frisbee with friends at the park. Shooting hoops, jumping rope, roller skating, and dribbling a soccer ball are all examples of sports teens can do solo. Get outside and enjoy the fresh air!
Building and growing a vegetable garden will give teens a unique experience as they learn what it takes to grow food. It may be too early to get started with the actual planting depending on the weather in your region, but now is the time to start researching how to build a vegetable garden. Consider whether you will have garden beds, raised beds or a planter garden. They all work, but require different approaches. Other tasks to research include soil, irrigation, and what plants grow best when.
Planting a vegetable garden is a fun activity for teenagers because it gets them outside, allows them to see what dedication and hard work can create, and it’s edible! Popular spring vegetables include lettuce, rhubarb, asparagus, peas and spinach. These tend to be heartier plants that can survive in cool weather. As the weather warms up you can look at other vegetables.
Now’s the time for teens to learn new skills that can boost their resume later. Take a photography class, learn another language using one of the many free apps out there, or try picking up an instrument. Learning a new skill takes time, but it can be rewarding to see progress and growth. Happy Camper Live’s website has a variety of music classes including percussion camp, guitar camp, singing camp and more!
