Activities
Dancing is a fun activity that helps channel kids’ energy, while improving their physical health. Regular dance practice can increase flexibility, range of motion, stamina, balance and strength while contributing to positive mental health. Learning a new dance move can help build self-confidence and spark creativity. What are you waiting for, let’s get dancing!
Requirements: 4+ players, music, open floor and spotlight (a flashlight would work)
Goal: Be the last player remaining.
Rules: Select one kid to hold the spotlight and another to work on the music. The one with the spotlight should be in the center of the floor. As the music starts, kids start dancing and the person holding the spotlight will shine the light on dancers one by one. The one who controls the music can stop it at any time, and when the music stops the dancer who is in the spotlight is out. The game continues until one dancer is left.
Spotlight is a fun game that allows kids to dance freely, but also adds a competitive aspect.
Requirements: 4+ players, music, music and chairs
Goal: Be the last player remaining.
Rules: Like musical chairs, dance musical chairs is an elimination game where the last player remaining wins. Set the chairs up in a circle around the dance floor. Start with one chair less than the number of players. Kids dance until the music stops. Then when it stops they have to dance their way over to a chair. No running allowed. Runners get disqualified. The kid who doesn’t make it to a chair is out. Remove a chair and continue with the next round. This goes until the last round when the winner is declared!
Dance musical chairs is a fun take on the classic game.
Requirements: 2+ players, music and emotion card
Goal: Learn to express different emotions through dance.
Rules: Use a large posterboard and draw faces to reflect different emotions or write the words. Use happy, sad, scared, angry, etc. To play, raise a card for the kids, and they dance to the theme of that emotion. Pick music that matches the mood of the emotions. Play some pop for happy and maybe an instrumental song for sad.
The emotions dance is a fun game that allows kids to experiment with different styles of dance while learning to connect with music.
Requirements: 3+ players and music
Goal: Build a dance together while working on memory skills.
Rules: Pick a song you want to make up a dance to. Each person will take turns adding a move to the dance. The first person will come up with a few seconds of movement. Then everyone repeats the movement. The second person will then do the movement of the first person and add on their own movement. Then everyone repeats that sequence, and on it goes. Eventually you will have created a dance to an entire song.
Building a dance together allows fun collaboration while working on kids’ memory skills.
