Science
At camp, everyday supplies turn into experiments that feel magical. This Halloween, you can capture that same camp magic at home with Witch’s Potion Chemistry. Using safe, simple ingredients, kids can mix, bubble, and fizz their way to spooky creations – all while learning about real chemical reactions. It’s the perfect mix of hands-on fun and STEM learning.
You probably already have most of these in your kitchen:
• Baking soda
• Vinegar
• Dish soap
• Food coloring (green, purple, orange are perfect for Halloween!)
• Glitter or sequins (optional, for a sparkly touch)
• Plastic cauldron, bowl, or jar
#1 Set the Stage
Place your “cauldron” (a big bowl or plastic Halloween bucket works great) on a tray or table to catch any spills. Tell the kids they’re apprentice witches getting ready to brew their first potion.
#2 Add the Potion Base
Pour a few spoonfuls of baking soda into the cauldron. Add a squirt of dish soap. This helps make the bubbles bigger and foamier when the reaction starts.
#3 Choose Your Potion Color
Let kids pick their spooky potion color with food dye. A few drops of green makes a bubbling “slime brew,” while purple feels like a witch’s magic potion. Add glitter or sequins for an extra magical sparkle.
#4 Bring It to Life
Slowly pour vinegar into the cauldron and watch the fizzing, foaming reaction erupt. The baking soda and vinegar react to release carbon dioxide gas which is the real “magic” behind the potion.
#5 Experiment & Play
Encourage kids to try again with different amounts of baking soda, vinegar, or dish soap. Ask questions like: What happens if we add more soap? What if we use a tall jar instead of a wide bowl? This helps kids think like little scientists while still having fun.
Here’s what’s really happening in your cauldron: baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When they mix, they react and create a gas called carbon dioxide. That gas makes bubbles in the vinegar, and the dish soap traps those bubbles, creating all that foamy fizz. So, while it looks like a witch’s spell, it’s actually science at work!
This activity is quick to set up, easy to clean, and packed with wow-factor for kids. It blends imaginative Halloween play (pretend witches and bubbling brews) with real science, teaching kids about chemical reactions in a way they’ll actually remember. Plus, it’s an inexpensive activity that works for parties, family nights, or even a little backyard “camp science lab.”
