Let’s take all those classic camp games your kids know and love and give them a spooky seasonal upgrade.
The best part? You don’t need fancy supplies or a lot of prep time. These are low-effort, high-fun games that kids of all ages can enjoy, and parents can feel great about.
Classic tag turns creepy with a Halloween makeover. Choose one player to start as the Zombie, and instead of tagging with a hand, the zombie “infects” other players by tagging them with slow, dragging zombie arms. Once tagged, they join the zombie horde. The last human left wins!
Camp-style tips: Play in a dim backyard or field with glow sticks or flashlights. Add spooky music or howling sound effects to build the mood!
Just like a camp treasure hunt, but haunted! Hide Halloween-themed items (plastic spiders, mini pumpkins, glow sticks, fake bones, candy, etc.) around your yard, home, or classroom. Give kids a list of what to find and let them hunt in teams or solo.
Extra fun: Make the hunt glow-in-the-dark or after dark with flashlights. Or turn it into a puzzle: each found item has a clue that leads to the next.
Scavenger list ideas:
• A ghost hiding in a tree (cotton ball ghost)
• A witch’s broom (stick with ribbon)
• Monster footprints (chalk drawings)
• A howling sound (Bluetooth speaker playing spooky noises!)
• Glow stick bones
Instead of cones, use witch hats (real or made from construction paper) and toss glow stick rings or embroidery hoops onto the points. It’s great for all ages and can easily be set up in your driveway or living room.
Pro tip: Give out Halloween trinkets or stickers as prizes for participation. Every little ghoul is a winner!
Inspired by Capture the Flag, this game uses two teams, each hiding a mini pumpkin on their side. Teams must sneak over, steal the other team’s pumpkin, and bring it back without getting tagged.
Spooky bonus: Let players dress in black or wear Halloween costumes. Use glow-in-the-dark tape to mark boundaries if playing after dark.
Set up a “bowling lane” using empty plastic bottles decorated as ghosts, monsters, or skeletons. Use a small pumpkin as your bowling ball. It’s hilarious, a little unpredictable, and totally on theme.
Campy flair: Keep a scoreboard and let kids name their teams things like “Team Howlers” or “The Pumpkin Smashers.”
These Halloween twists on traditional camp games bring all the excitement of Halloween without the sugar overload or screen time. They’re active, creative, and easy to adapt for school, home, youth groups, or neighborhood play.
You don’t need a haunted house or expensive decorations to create memorable Halloween fun. With just a few supplies and a little creativity, you can turn your backyard or classroom into a spooky mini camp that keeps kids engaged, laughing, and loving every minute of October.
So round up your zombies, grab a flashlight, and get ready to chase, toss, hunt, and howl your way through a Halloween they’ll never forget!
