STEM Experiments with Fall Finds

Written By: happycamper

Fall isn’t just about pumpkin patches and colorful leaves—it’s also the perfect season for hands-on learning. With so many natural treasures to discover outside, kids can turn their backyard or a walk through the park into a STEM adventure.

Here are some fun and easy experiments using fall finds:

Leaf Color Science

Why do leaves change colors in the fall? Collect different kinds of leaves and use rubbing alcohol and coffee filters to separate the pigments. Crush up the leaves, soak them in alcohol, and drip the liquid onto strips of coffee filter. As the paper dries, kids will see the hidden pigments spread out—revealing the science behind fall’s rainbow of colors.

Pumpkins come in all shapes and sizes during the fall. Before carving, test if different pumpkins sink or float in a tub of water. Ask kids to predict the outcome first—most will float, even the big ones! Then, measure and compare results to learn about density and buoyancy.

Pinecone Weather Station

Did you know pinecones can help predict the weather? Collect a few and leave them outside. When it’s dry, the pinecones open up. When it’s damp or rainy, they close. Kids can record their observations over a week and use pinecones as their very own natural weather tool.

Cut up apples and test different ways to keep them from turning brown. Try lemon juice, salt water, honey, or plain water, and check which method works best. This experiment shows kids how oxidation happens—and how science can slow it down!

Seed Sprouting Challenge

Save seeds from pumpkins, squash, or apples and see which ones sprout the fastest. Plant them in cups with soil or even on a damp paper towel. Kids can track their growth, measure the sprouts, and compare how different seeds respond.

Why STEM in the Fall is Awesome

STEM learning is all about curiosity, discovery, and hands-on fun—and fall is bursting with opportunities. Using simple finds from nature, kids can turn an ordinary walk into a science lab and see the season from a whole new perspective.

So grab some leaves, pumpkins, or pinecones and get experimenting—the best classroom might just be outside!
