Make Your Own Fall Leaf Creatures

Written By: happycamper

A simple nature craft that sparks big creativity!

a child holds up leavesOne of the best things about fall (besides pumpkin patches and cozy sweaters) is that the world outside suddenly becomes a giant, free craft supply bin. From vibrant red maple leaves to crunchy brown oak leaves, fall offers the perfect opportunity to turn your next walk into an art adventure.

That’s where Fall Leaf Creatures come in. This is an easy, screen-free craft where kids can use real leaves to make silly, spooky, or adorable creatures using just a few basic supplies and their imagination. These Fall Leaf Creatures also encourage creativity and storytelling that will make the afternoon feel magical!

What You’ll Need

You don’t need much to get started. Here’s a simple list of supplies:

From nature:

• A collection of fall leaves in different colors, shapes, and sizes

• Optional: small twigs, pine needles, acorns, or flower petals

Craft supplies:

• Glue sticks or liquid glue

• Construction paper or cardstock (white or colored)

• Googly eyes

• Markers or crayons

• Scissors (kid-safe!)

• Tape (for harder-to-glue items like twigs)

#1 Go on a leaf walk.
Head outside and collect a mix of leaves. Encourage kids to look for unique shapes, fun colors, or leaves that remind them of animal ears, wings, or tails.

#2 Sort and flatten.
Lay the leaves out on a table or press them between the pages of a book for a few minutes to flatten. If some leaves are too crunchy, spray water on it before flattening.

#3 Start building your creature!
Have the kiddos choose a leaf (or two!) to be the body. Add smaller leaves for arms, legs, ears, or wings. Use googly eyes to bring their creature to life and markers to draw faces, accessories, or scenes.

#4 Give it a name and backstory.
Is it a forest monster? A leaf unicorn? A squirrel’s secret pet? This part is where the storytelling begins!

#5 Let dry and display.
Once dry, hang them up with clothespins or tape them to a wall, fridge, or window for some homemade fall decor.

Creating Fall Leaf Creatures is one of those magical crafts that feels simple but delivers so much – fresh air, laughter, imagination, and the kind of quiet focus that fills a cozy fall afternoon.
