Outdoor adventure
You don’t need to load up the car or head to the woods to give your kids the magic of a camping experience. With a little creativity (and maybe some extra marshmallows), you can create an unforgettable backyard camping adventure that’s cozy, fun, and full of that classic camp spirit. Dont worry! There are no bugs or porta-potties required!
The Basics: What You’ll Need#1 A Tent (or Fort!)
If you have a tent, great! Set it up in the backyard with sleeping bags or blankets inside. No tent? No problem. Use tarps, old sheets, or even string lights and stakes to create a DIY fort under the stars.
#2 Lots of Cozy Layers
Fall nights can get chilly. Gather blankets, quilts, and extra pillows to make the tent feel soft and inviting. Stuffed animals, camp lanterns, and fairy lights can turn the whole space magical.
#3 Sleeping Bags or Cozy Alternatives
If you have sleeping bags, roll them out! If not, make little “beds” with comforters or foam mats. The goal is cozy, not complicated.
You don’t need a firepit to enjoy camp snacks. Here are a few easy, kid-approved treats you can prep ahead or make together:
• Stovetop or microwave popcorn served in brown paper “camp” bags
• S’mores in the oven or microwave
• Hot cocoa or warm apple cider in thermoses or camp mugs
• DIY snack mix bar with pretzels, cereal, mini marshmallows, and chocolate chips
Set up a snack tray or “camp kitchen” table nearby so kids can help themselves. It adds to the sense of adventure!
🔦 Camp-Style Fun & GamesOnce the sun sets, it’s time for classic camp fun that is adapted for your backyard.
Flashlight Tag
A favorite after-dark game. Let kids run and tag each other with beams of light. Bonus points for spooky sound effects or hide-and-seek rules.
Constellation Spotting
Lay on blankets and look up at the stars. Use a free stargazing app or printable constellation guide to find shapes in the sky. Talk about star stories and make up your own!
Storytime by (LED) Campfire
Gather in a circle with flashlights or a lantern in the middle and tell spooky stories or read a favorite book. Let kids take turns “hosting” the campfire.
Nature Night BINGO
Make or print a backyard version of BINGO with items like crickets chirping, a plane flying overhead, a dog barking, or spotting a moth.
To make your backyard camping adventure go off without a hitch, a little prep goes a long way. Start by figuring out the bathroom situation in advance. Kids will definitely need a late-night trip or two, and having a plan avoids scrambling in the dark. It’s also totally okay to have a backup plan in case someone gets cold, scared, or just over it; part of the beauty of backyard camping is that home is just a few steps away. Involve your kids in the setup so they feel like part of the adventure. Give them fun roles like “tent captain” or “snack manager” to make it feel more like camp. Add in a few simple camp-themed touches like name tags or a handmade “Camp Cozy Hollow” sign to make it extra special. With just a few thoughtful details, your backyard can feel like a whole new world, full of imagination and memory-making moments.
Backyard camping is one of those childhood memories that sticks. The crunch of leaves under a blanket, the laughter echoing in the dark, and the feeling of sleeping just a few feet from home but worlds away in your imagination.
Whether it’s your family’s first campout or just one of many fall traditions, setting up your own little campsite under the stars is a simple way to bring connection, creativity, and that joyful camp energy to your everyday life.
Let the fun begin!
