How to Make Pinecone Owls: A Fall Camp Craft for Kids

Written By: happycamper

One of the best things about camp crafts is how they use simple, natural materials to spark imagination. Pinecone owls are the perfect example. They’re easy to make, inexpensive, and a wonderful way to get kids outside collecting supplies. This craft blends the coziness of fall with a little camp magic, making it just right for a weekend project or even a Halloween display.

Materials You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather a few items. Most of these you probably already have around the house or can find on a quick walk.

#1 Pinecones (medium or large work best)

#2 Felt or construction paper in fall colors (orange, brown, yellow, black)

#3 Googly eyes

#4 Craft glue or a hot glue gun (grown-up use only!)

#5 Scissors

#6 Small twigs or acorn caps for extra details

#1 Choose Your Pinecone
Find a pinecone with a nice wide base so it can stand on its own. The open scales create the perfect “feathered” texture for your owl.

#2 Cut Out the Owl’s Face
Using felt or paper, cut out a small circle or heart shape for the owl’s face. This is where your googly eyes will sit.

#3 Add the Eyes and Beak
Glue two googly eyes onto the face cutout, then snip a tiny triangle of yellow or orange felt for the beak. Attach them in the center.

#4 Make the Wings
Cut two oval-shaped pieces of felt in brown, orange, or patterned fall colors. Glue them to the sides of the pinecone, slightly angled back to look like wings.

#5 Add Fun Details
For extra charm, glue an acorn cap on top as a little “hat,” or add a small twig for the owl to perch on. Kids can even sprinkle a little glitter on the wings if they want a magical fall touch.

These little owls make great seasonal decorations: line them up on your fireplace mantle, add them to your kids’ bookshelf, or place them in the windowsill for Halloween. If you’re hosting a fall party or camp-themed playdate, they also make adorable table centerpieces. Best of all, each owl will be unique and will bring out the creative side of your kiddos!
