Activities
Staying active during the fall can be an exciting and energizing experience for kids. Whether they’re enjoying the vibrant colors of autumn leaves or gearing up for Halloween, fall offers plenty of opportunities to embrace fitness in fun and creative ways.
Nothing says fall like jumping into a giant pile of leaves! Turn this classic activity into a full-blown fitness event by setting up a series of leaf pile challenges. Kids can race to rake leaves into the biggest pile, have leaf relay races, or even practice long jumps into the piles. It’s a simple way to incorporate cardio, coordination, and teamwork while enjoying the beauty of autumn.
Combine physical activity with a nature walk by organizing a fall-themed scavenger hunt. Create a list of autumn items like acorns, pinecones, different colored leaves, or animal tracks for kids to find. Set up clues that require kids to run, jump, or climb to different areas of the campsite. This is a great way to work in exercise while sparking curiosity about the natural world.
Pumpkins aren’t just for carving—they make perfect fitness tools! Have kids carry pumpkins in relay races, set up obstacle courses, or even use them in a balance challenge. The weight of the pumpkins adds a fun challenge to these activities, helping kids build strength and coordination.
Set up an outdoor obstacle course using items like hay bales, pumpkins, and fallen branches. Incorporate a variety of movements like crawling, balancing, jumping, and running. For an extra fall flair, you can add seasonal challenges such as tossing mini pumpkins into a bucket or weaving through a maze of scarecrows.
Keep the energy high by hosting a campfire dance party with some fall-themed tunes. Dancing is an excellent way to get kids moving, and it’s a great way to build endurance while they burn off energy. Bonus points for Halloween-themed music and a costume contest!
Fall is the perfect time for a scenic hike, and the cooler temperatures make it more enjoyable for kids to be outside. Choose a beginner-friendly trail and encourage kids to keep their eyes peeled for wildlife or colorful leaves. Hiking promotes endurance, balance, and cardiovascular health while offering a peaceful way to connect with nature.
Many camps are located near farms, orchards, or natural areas where apple picking can be an active adventure. Take the kids on an apple-picking trip where they can climb ladders, walk through fields, and carry baskets filled with apples. Afterward, you can incorporate the apples into a healthy campfire snack!
Put a seasonal spin on the classic game of Capture the Flag by replacing the flag with a scarecrow or stuffed pumpkin. Add some fun, fall-themed obstacles to the playing area like leaf piles to jump into or pumpkins to dodge. The mix of running, strategy, and teamwork makes this a high-energy activity that kids love.
Introduce kids to the calming practice of yoga, but give it a seasonal spin by teaching them poses inspired by fall elements. “Tree pose” can be adapted to mimic the swaying of autumn trees, while “pumpkin pose” can involve playful balancing techniques. Yoga helps kids improve flexibility, balance, and mindfulness, making it a perfect way to wind down after a day of outdoor fun.
Get out there and enjoy all that fall has to offer while keeping your campers fit and full of energy!
