Teaching gratitude at camp is one of the simplest and most meaningful ways to help kids grow, connect, and appreciate the world around them. Whether it’s fall, Thanksgiving season, or simply a moment to slow down during a busy schedule, gratitude activities help campers build empathy, strengthen friendships, and recognize the joy in everyday experiences.
Gratitude Nature WalkA gratitude nature walk turns a classic camp activity into a powerful reflective moment. During the walk, encourage campers to notice things in nature they feel thankful for—the crunch of leaves, the breeze, a friendly squirrel, or the warmth of the sun.
To make it interactive, have kids gather one small (parent-approved) item that represents something they’re grateful for and share it at the end of the walk.
A Thankful Tree is a perfect hands-on fall craft. Kids create paper leaves and write something they appreciate on each one—friends, family, favorite foods, or silly moments.
Hang the leaves on an indoor plant branch, fridge, or bulletin board to create a growing visual reminder of gratitude.
Campfires are already full of warm memories, so they’re the perfect setting for a gratitude circle. If you have a fireplace, you can recreate this traditional camp activity at home. Invite each child to share one thing they’re thankful for—big or small. If you don’t have a fireplace at home, consider doing this around your family meal time.
Gratitude Journals or Mini NotebooksGive kids small notebooks to turn into gratitude journals. Each day, ask them to write or draw three things they’re grateful for.
For younger kids, prompt ideas like:
• Something that made you smile
• A friend who helped you
• A moment you felt brave
This activity helps children notice the positive moments in their day and practice mindfulness.
Kids love giving and receiving kindness coupons! Provide kids with slips of paper they can turn into “coupons” offering acts of kindness—helping a friend clean up, giving someone a turn, offering a compliment, or sharing a game. These small gestures build a culture of gratitude and teamwork across camp and can work in your own home or a classroom too!
A simple thank-you note goes a long way. Provide colorful paper, stickers, and markers so kids can write thank-you cards to teachers, family members, friends, or neighbors.
• Gratitude activities help kids build empathy, mindfulness, and stronger camp communities.
• Camp gratitude activities are simple to add to any schedule and work well for fall, Thanksgiving, or year-round learning.
• Hands-on crafts, outdoor experiences, journaling, and group sharing all help kids explore gratitude in fun, age-appropriate ways.
• Encouraging gratitude helps kids develop lifelong emotional skills and boosts their overall happiness.
