Hi, I’m David. I’m the music counselor with Happy Camper Live. Today I’m going to teach you some things about the ukulele and songwriting. The most important things about songwriting are your lyrics and melody. You want to convey a beautiful melody but also capture the words you want to get across. Since I’m in the outdoors at camp, I would like to write a song about trees, the earth, and flowers all around us. How do you come up with that, and what are the important things you want to say? Writing songs just comes from your heart. It’s all about expressing the things you enjoy and observe. That may seem overwhelming because there are so many great things you could write about, so just start strumming with your ukulele and see what ideas come up. Humming along while you play sometimes helps too. The ukulele is an easygoing, relaxing kind of sound, which works well with singing about trees, the earth, and even camp. Even if you don’t come up with the best lyrics right away, those lyrics might spark another idea. So take your ukulele out and start strumming. I’m David from Happy Camper Live. Keep on strumming!
