Hi, I’m coach JT from Happy Camper Live. Today I’m going to teach you about volleys. Volleys are a unique shot in tennis. When you volley, you get a little bit closer to the net and hit the ball out of the air without it bouncing. A lot of times when you’re playing a point, and you serve or receive a shot, your opponent may hit a shorter shot. This draws you in to the net and makes it very difficult to get back, so then you’re going to try to volley the ball out of the air. One thing you want to do for volleys is when you see the ball coming, turn your shoulders a quarter turn. When you’re volleying, you don’t want to swing too much at the ball. It’s very hard to control that way. After you’ve turned a quarter turn, you just want to give the ball a high five by putting the strings right on the back of the ball. When you make contact with the ball, wherever the strings are facing is where the ball is going to go. If you get the ball on your backhand side, turn your shoulders a little bit and push your strings wherever you want the ball to go. If you get a forehand volley, you’re going to end up stepping with your left foot. For a backhand volley, you’re going to do the opposite, turning your shoulders and then stepping with your right foot. I’m coach JT from Happy Camper Live helping you get into the swing of things.
