Hi, I’m coach JT from Happy Camper Live. Today I’m going to teach you how to serve. When you are playing a game, you’re going to have to serve throughout the whole game. You always start on the right side of the middle of the court. The hash mark in the middle of the back line represents the middle of the court. When you serve, you have to serve it over the net and into the box that is diagonal from you. Usually when you serve, you’re going to toss the ball up and make contact over your head, but you don’t have to. The only thing that is required to serve is to hit the ball without it bouncing. If you really need to, you can just hit it underhanded. The most efficient way to serve, however, is to serve over your head. I like to teach serving like a throwing motion. For example, if you didn’t have the racket in your hand, and held the ball instead, the motion you would make in order to throw that ball is the same you use when serving. The hardest part about it is that you also have to throw the ball up with your other hand. When you make contact with the ball, wherever your strings are facing is where the ball is going to go. When you go to serve, you want to have a service windup. Start with your hands in front of you, then your racket and hand are going to go down together, and back up together. When you go up, you toss the ball up while your racket comes up ready to fire at the ball. The cool thing about serves is you get two chances. So if you mess up on the first one, you get an extra chance to try to get it in the box. For the next point you will move to the other side of the court and serve from that side, alternating after each point. I’m coach JT from Happy Camper Live helping you get into the swing of things.
