Hi. I’m your music counselor, Griffin, here at Happy Camper Live. Today I am going to teach you how to play one of the most popular sounds on a drum: The drum roll! It’s not real difficult, but it will take a little bit of practice. It’s a lot of fun to do once you master it. To start a roll, you first need to hold your drum sticks with a little bit of stick beyond your bottom palm, with most of the stick in front. Your hands should face the sky. When holding the stick, put a little bit of pressure between your first and second fingers and your thumb. All you’re really going to do is bounce the stick off the drum with gravity pulling it down. To do this, take your stick, and drop it onto the drum and let it bounce while continuing to hold onto the stick. Notice the sound the stick makes the last 2 seconds of the bounce. This is the sound you want. Practice dropping your stick onto the drum to just get that last 2 seconds of bounce. Once you master this, you can start to blend both hands together, by dropping them each one after the other. Eventually, you can master blending them together to make it smooth.I’m Griffin from Happy Camper Live. Rock on!
