Hi. My name is Jess, and I’m the gymnastics counselor here at Happy Camper Live. Today I’m going to show you how to do a handstand with a spotter. You should always have a spotter when you are learning. Start with your most comfortable leg forward, slightly bent, and your back leg straight. Put your arms up so they cover your ears, with your palms facing the sky. Squeeze your stomach and bottom while you kick up. You may not always get up on the first try, so just keep trying. Once you do get up, your legs should be straight up with your toes pointed to the sky. The spotter should stand with one arm out in front of the gymnast, and their other hand free. When the gymnast comes up, the spotter’s arm is there to catch her and prevent her from tumbling over. If the gymnast comes back down too hard in the other direction, the spotter should use their other hand to guide them. That’s how you do a handstand.
