Hey campers! It’s Coach Mick from Perseverance Basketball here at Happy Camper Live. Today, we’re going to learn about footwork and pivots. All the great basketball players have great footwork. Footwork is an important part of the game. The better your footwork is, the better ball handler you are, the better shooter you are, and the better you move.First, I’m going to teach you how to do a jump stop. Start out running, and then you jump. When you jump stop, you come to a complete stop. Both of your feet hit the floor at the same time, and your balance is square. From this position, I can shoot, drive, or pass. Now let’s learn about pivots. Pivots are very important. You can pivot to get away from a defender, you can pivot to get into a shot. First, the reverse pivot. Reverse means you’re going back. Start out doing a jump stop. For a right foot reverse pivot, your left foot stays on the ground, and your right foot swings backward. When doing pivots, keep low the entire time. For left foot reverse, your right foot stays on the ground, and your left foot swings backward. The next pivot to learn is the forward pivot. Start out doing a jump stop. For the left foot forward pivot, your right foot stays on the ground and your left foot swings forward. Remember to keep low the entire time. When pivoting, you can only move one foot. That’s footwork! Practice it anywhere and anytime.
