Hey Guys. Coach Will here from Will Leonard's Baseball Instruction from Atlanta, Georgia and I'm here with Happy Camper Live today to give you some pitching tips. When pitching, there four things we want to keep in mind: Up, break, tuck, and controlling our head.Let’s start from the beginning. First, you want your feet against the rubber, not on it. A lot of campers come in here and dig into the mound. That's not going to do us any good. The only thing that will do is create a little ditch where your foot needs to go. There's no need to be digging out the mound-plus you're going to aggravate a lot of grounds keepers! From the beginning, you want to be in a nice relaxed position. You don't want to be too tense. That wastes energy. To get yourself moving towards the plate you want to eliminate all this wasted movement. I see a lot of campers do this trying to get a lot of power, but controlling yourself will be more powerful than swaying yourself around. You just want a nice little 45 degree step back. Also remember to control your head.Next you have to pivot your throwing foot. Keep your hands nice and relaxed around your belly button and bring your hands up with your knee. This is the Up. When you get to this position, with your knee raised, you are then in the Balance position. Once you get to the Balance position you are ready to go into the next position, Break. From the Balance position, you’re going to break with your arm back, ready to come forward and throw. While you’re breaking, you want to pretend to slide the baseball across the table for as long as you can to get in the throwing position.Next, let’s talk about power W's. When you’re in the balance position you want to break to the W position. The W position allows for strength and the proper mechanics of the body to deliver the ball properly. Next, use your elbow as your target, or laser, as it’s called. Point your elbow towards your target. That's going to set your sights to where you want to throw the baseball.Next, the Tuck. You've come from the wind up, you've got a little break, you’re good and relaxed. Come up, break, and tuck. You want to pretend there's a little barrel underneath the armpit. You want to pretend you are breaking that with the elbow. So tuck yourself in to deliver the baseball. Your eyes, nose, and chin should be pointed right towards your target, and your head should fall in a straight line. You do not want your head pulling off to the left or right. It’s all about controlling the head. From this position, start with your thumb down inside your glove. Next, your thumb comes up, tuck, and keep your eyes, nose, and chin straight to your target.
