Hey Guys. Coach Will here from Will Leonard's Baseball Instruction from Atlanta,Georgia and I'm here with Happy Camper Live to teach you a few tips on how to hit the baseball. There are four fundamentals that to go through when we hit: 1.Grip 2.Stance 3.A weight shift, (or load) 4.Follow through First, the grip. You want to line up your first set of knuckles. That puts the bat in your fingertips. What you don't want to do is line up your back knuckles. That will choke the bat and cut off your swing. It can also hurt your wrists. The second fundamental is your stance. There are a lot of different stances among campers-some hit open, some hit closed. This is just a matter of preference. A stance is nothing but a starting position for you, so it just needs to feel comfortable. The last thing you want to be thinking when you're in the batter’s box is “I don't feel comfortable.” Make it comfortable and balanced. The third fundamental is the weight shift, or load. When hitting a baseball, you must go back before you can go forward. This allows for more power and better timing of the pitcher. It's simple: You go back, forward, then come to the ball. That's it, just a nice shift back and forth. Finally, contact and the follow through. You've got your grip, you're comfortable, you've shifted, and now it’s time to hit. Once you've come in to the swing and you make contact with the ball, a lot of campers like to hit the ball and come around their rib cage. That's a no-no. What you want to do is hit the ball and keep the barrel going through the ball for as long as you can and try to end around your shoulder area for the follow through. This allows for more power for the ball to really take off. So, lets recap: You've got your grip; your fingertips; you're lining up your door-knocking knuckles; and your stance is nice, balanced, and comfortable. You're going to shift back and forth into the ball and at contact you want to go through the ball to your shoulders.
