Hey Guys. Coach Will here today from Will Leonard's Baseball Instruction from Atlanta, Georgia and I'm here with Happy Camper Live to help you learn the proper way to field a ground ball. The first thing you want to do when you're in the field is check your surroundings. Check the fielder to your left, check the fielder to your right, and communicate with each other. This is the best time to do it. Check the hitter-is he a lefty or righty? You may need to adjust. Once you’ve checked your surroundings, you should prepare yourself to make a play. As the pitcher is getting his sign from the catcher, you want to be nice and relaxed-not moving around wasting a lot of energy. Be ready to make a play. Next, as the pitcher is coming set, you want to get baseball ready. This is called the right left ready position: As the pitcher is delivering the ball, you step with your right foot, then your left foot, drop in to the ready position, and anticipate the ball coming to you. You may need to come in on the ball, you may need to go back on the ball, you may need to go left, you may need to go right. Be ready ready for all scenarios. Anticipation is very important. If you are not anticipating, it is much harder for you to make a play when the ball is hit to you. Always expect the ball to come your way. When the ball is hit to you, the right left ready position will assist you because it positions you to move to your left. This is useful since first base is always to your left side. After you do your right left step, you want to have your hands out, your feet wide, and your buttocks down. Position your hands whichever is more comfortable for you: Some people prefer having their non-glove hand over the top of the glove like an alligator, others prefer having their non-glove hand to the side like they are closing a book. Choose whichever is more comfortable for you. When fielding the ball, you want to get your right foot outside of the ball as far as you can to help you transition to your left for the throw. Once you've received the ball, you should close the ball in to your chest and bring the ball to your throwing shoulder. Once you've got the ball to your shoulder, you shuffle, throw the ball and follow your throw. Following the throw is the most important thing that you can do because it takes the pressure off your arm, makes you more accurate and gives you strength in your throw. I hope you take this tip today and use it to make you a better fielder and a stronger thrower.
